Proper care and maintenance is the best way to insure the HELPDESK will not have to pay you a visit. In this session, we will begin to create basic steps to keep laptops working efficiently.

Framing the Session
iSquaders, one of the common complaints that students have about their school’s technology, many times it does not work. Due to heavy usage everyday, laptops will begin to breakdown. Today, we are going learn one method of preventative maintenance on laptops and how to share that with other students.
Teaching
You have a group of fellow students that have laptops. It is important that these laptops are operating properly. The only way that will happen is that basic steps are taken to maintain these laptops. Now you are only one person … you cannot maintain all of those laptops yourself. Therefore you will show your fellow students how to clean their own laptops.
Before you get started, the laptop should be off. Any type of liquid and electricity is not good for the laptop.
Now let’s clean the laptop (Give student’s handout). The items needed to clean your laptop are as follows:
Soft Rag
Q tip swabs
Computer Cleaner
Compressed Air
Cleaning your Laptop:
Use the can of compressed air and blow air between the keys. This keeps dirt and dust from building under the keys. This will cause the keys to stick.
Use the can of compressed air to blow air into all of the jacks and ports on the laptop. This will ensure that dirt and dust are not building up in the jacks and ports.
Spray Computer Cleaner on a soft rag and wipe down the surfaces of the computer. DO NOT SPRAY THE CLEANER ON THE COMPUTER. You do not want liquid getting down into the computer … It could damage it.
Use caution when wiping down the keys. You do not want to wipe the letters/symbols off the keys.
The screen is a LCD (Liquid Crystal) screen. It should be cleaned for two reasons:
You want to be able to see the screen clearly
Dirt and dust can scratch the screen
Be very gentle when wiping the screens surface.
Use the Q-tip swab to clean the corners and crevasses of the laptop.
Spill on Keyboard
Use computer cleaner on a Q-tip swab and rub on the affected keys until the residue from the spill is gone. Be careful of the letters/symbols on the keys.
Spray compressed air into the keys to dry off the keys surface and between the keys.
Guided Practice
Now that I have shown you the procedure, it is your turn to try it. Perform each step slowly … think it through.
(Faculty Advisor: Walk around the class … as the students are scanning for their school’s network. Ask them questions about the steps they are taking.)
Have the students review each step and explain the importance of each step. WORK TIME(Typically lasts about 60–70% of session.)
Getting Started
It’s time to try it on your own. You will pair up with a partner and for the next 30 minutes practice showing others how to clean a laptop so they can do it independently. When the 30 minutes are up, we will come back together and discuss what you learned.
Participant Activity
Step 1
Have students decide which partner will be the iSquader and the Student.
Step 2
The iSquader will ask the Student what they know about cleaning a laptop.
Step 3
The iSquader will explain to the Student what items are needed to clean a laptop.
Step 4
The iSquader will explain to the Student the purpose of each of the procedures.
Step 5
The iSquader will walk the Student through each step of cleaning a laptop.
Step 6
When the activity is completed, the iSquader will have the Student review the steps of cleaning a laptop again.

Reverse Roles Facilitator Conferring
While the participants are practicing, walk around the room to offer support and guidance. Notice, if there are any common problems participants are having that might need to be reviewed. SHARE(Typically lasts about 10–20% of session.)

When conferring with the students, find examples of practices that iSquaders used that were successful when working with their student.
When you bring the students together for the share, refer them to your lesson’s focusing questions and ask:
